The challenge
When shipping internationally, determining the correct HS Code for your product is essential for calculating duties and taxes. While manufacturers may provide the HS code for the product’s origin country, the code can vary across destination countries.
Only the first six digits of the HS code are standardized worldwide. Beyond that, each country applies its own extensions. For example:
- In South Africa, a leather backpack has one HS code.
- In the United States, it could map to three different HS codes.
- In the European Union, it could fall under four different HS codes.
Each variation may result in a different duty or tax rate.
