What are dangerous or restricted goods?
Dangerous or restricted goods are products that are subject to special regulations when shipped, imported, or exported due to safety, health, environmental, or legal concerns.
These items often require special permits, packaging, labeling, or transport methods.
Dangerous goods
Dangerous goods are substances or items that can pose risks to people, property, or the environment during transport. They are typically classified according to the United Nations (UN) Dangerous Goods List and may include:
- Explosives (e.g. fireworks, ammunition)
- Flammable liquids (e.g. gasoline, solvents)
- Gases (e.g. propane, aerosols)
- Corrosives (e.g. acids, alkaline cleaning agents)
- Toxic substances (e.g. pesticides, certain chemicals)
These goods must be handled in compliance with international regulations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations for air freight or the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code for sea freight.
Restricted goods
Restricted goods may not be inherently dangerous but are subject to import or export controls. Restrictions vary by country and may include:
- Prescription medicines
- Weapons and ammunition
- Endangered species or products made from them (CITES-regulated)
- Cultural artifacts
- Certain electronics or encrypted devices
These items usually require permits, licenses, or proof of compliance before shipment.
Why this matters
- Delays & Costs: Incorrect handling or missing permits can result in customs delays, fines, or confiscation.
- Carrier Limitations: Not all couriers or freight forwarders accept dangerous or restricted goods.
- Compliance Obligations: You are responsible for ensuring your shipment meets all relevant laws and regulations.
While we will provide compliance warnings in our calculation notes, always check the destination country’s import regulations and your carrier’s dangerous goods policy before shipping. When in doubt, consult a licensed customs broker or dangerous goods specialist.
